TARRANT COUNTY (WBAP/KLIF News ) – A North Texas judge sentenced a Fort Worth father to 40 years in prison for conspiring with his son to deal methamphetamine.
Both 59-year-old David Devaney Senior and 36-year-old David Devaney Junior opted for a bench trial and were found guilty of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute a controlled substance by U.S. District Judge Mark Pittman in November 2022.
The elder Devany was sentenced last Thursday and Devany junior is scheduled to be sentenced on May 4th.
Co-conspirator 36-year-old Cory Litts pleaded guilty to the same charge in October 2022 and was sentenced to more than 22 years in prison earlier this month.
Court records show the investigation into Devaney Senior began last June, when a cooperating defendant identified him as a methamphetamine distributor.
Later that month, investigators received a call about the shooting death of 64-year-old Kathryn Bryan.
She’s innocent bystander who was hit by cross fire in a Burleson drug deal gone wrong last July.
According to U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas Leigha Simonton, surveillance video connected Devaney Senior’s car to the incident which is believed to be a drug deal gone bad in Burleson.
Officers tracked the car to a hotel parking lot, where they frisked the driver, Mr. Litts, and found a plastic baggy containing 115 grams of methamphetamine and a digital scale concealed inside his clothing.
They then approached Devany Senior, who was sitting in the passengers side, and observed him throw a shaving kit bag into a nearby bush.
Officers found more than a kilogram of meth and a “substantial amount” of money in the bag. When they frisked Devaney Senior, a ten-time convicted felon, they found a .40 caliber Smith & Wesson tucked into his waistband.
Police arrested Devaney Junior in connection with the shooting later that evening.
In an interview with authorities, Devaney Junior said his father “just went off the deep end…and he started selling drugs,” and later claimed Senior “just kept sucking me in.”
Both Devaney Senior and Junior face capital murder charges for their alleged role in Bryan’s death along with several other individuals.
