DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – Hundreds of off-duty flight attendants for Dallas based Southwest Airlines hit the picket lines on Tuesday outside Dallas Love Field Airport. Similar events were held at other American airports.
The flight attendants demanded better pay, safety on the job, and improved quality of life through a new contract with Southwest Airlines.
“The collective bargaining agreement TWU Local 556 holds with Southwest Airlines became amendable almost four years ago. Because of an overwhelming number of delays from the company, flight attendants are left without the changes that are necessary to improve their working conditions,” said TWU Local 556 President, Lynn Montgomery. “Flight attendants are demanding a new collective bargaining agreement with Southwest Airlines that addresses the many issues plaguing its members today that impact the ability of these safety professionals to do their jobs in helping to ensure passengers’ safety and comfort.”
Demands include paying flight attendants for time worked, giving control over their personal schedules when not at work, and providing access to food and a safe place to rest when traveling on the job. Flight attendants are also asking for technology issues that impact passengers be fixed, and for expanded benefits like health insurance that continues coverage when someone is injured on the job, is battling cancer or had a baby.
