BRUNSWICK, Ga. (WBAP/KLIF News) – After hours of deliberations in a Georgia courtroom, a jury found three men convicted of murder in Ahmaud Arbery’s shooting guilty of federal hate crimes.
The verdict came down Tuesday morning in a case that gained national attention.
Jurors found Greg and Travis McMichael and neighbor William “Roddie” Bryan violated Arbery’s civil rights when they chased him down and shot him to death because he was black.
Prosecutors showed jurors almost two dozen text messages and social media posts, in which Travis McMichael and Bryan used racist language about black people.
All three men had pleaded not guilty to the hate crime charges. They’re already facing life in prison on the murder convictions.
U.S. District Judge Lisa Godbey Wood will determine their sentence at a later date.
