DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF)- A Dallas City Council ‘General Investigating and Ethics Committee’ met Friday to discuss the city’s recent data loss and the ongoing recovery efforts.
According to the city, more than 22 terabytes of data, including police evidence files, were deleted by an employee earlier this year.
Councilmember Cara Mendelsohn says the FBI is involved and is conducting an investigation an the IT department is expected to release a report regarding the incident.
“The goal when we finish this investigation is to find out what happened and why, what was lost or restored, how the process can be improved and to make sure changes are implemented,” she said.
Mendelsohn said they want to restore trust in the public and will ensure that the work of the committee is evidence-based.
“Because so many of the files involved the Dallas Police Department the highest level of care is needed to ensure all files can be restored and the review is understood to be comprehensive, professional and impartial,” said Mendelsohn.
She said they will meet again in 30 days to follow up with the IT report and interview firms if they decide to go forward with hiring an outside source in an administrative investigation.
