DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) — Hope springs eternal for the Dallas Cowboys, who have begun pre-season practices. Quarterback Dak Prescott returned to the field for the first time since he suffered a season-ending compound fracture of his right ankle last October. Following the team’s first “organized team activities” he said the ankle “felt great”. He told ESPN: “After long months of recovery and just rehab, the main goal is to just getting back out there with my teammates, getting back on the field, running a huddle, building that camaraderie on the field. It’s just exciting yesterday and carrying over today, but so much we can build with the team and me personally. I’m just excited to know the game is back and I’m able to be a part of it.”
The Cowboys will have more OTAs this week and next. They aren’t mandatory but a minicamp June 8-10 will be. Trainers have Dak staying out of 11-on-11 scrimmages and gradually extending his participation in drills to strengthen his ankle. Head coach Mike McCarthy said he expects that protocol to continue until the Cowboys officially open training camp in July, at which time Prescott should be ready to go full throttle.
McCarthy told ESPN, “He’s put a ton of work into this. I’d say he’s ahead of schedule.”
