GALVESTON (WBAP/KLIF NEWS)- The Fourth of July weekend is approaching but some beach goers wont be able to celebrate as planned.
As COVID-19 case numbers rapidly increase throughout Texas, Galveston Mayor Jim Yarbrough has made the decision to close all city beaches for Fourth of July weekend. The closure begins at 5 am on Friday and last until Monday morning. The city will also be prohibiting parking on both sides of the historic Seawall Boulevard for the same amount of time. Chairs, picnics, tents, or any other type of tailgate equipment will not be allowed.
“At this time, based on the current health situation and the guidance of medical professionals, I do not feel it is prudent or responsible to have thousands of visitors descending on Galveston beaches,” said Mayor Yarbrough, “Galveston has and always will be a welcoming destination, but the ongoing public health crisis demands our attention and response. We have to prioritize health and safety.”
