FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF News) – A Fort Worth firefighter shared an honor with 92 others by being added to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Emmetbsburg, Maryland.
William Thompson started with the department in 1988 and served on a truck until he was side-lined with a job-related respiratory illness.
He continued to serve, working as a dispatcher, and retired in 2010.
Thompson died due to complications from his illness in 2014.
Several active and former members of the department traveled with the Thompson family for the annual ceremony.
The monument is a 7-foot stone that features a Maltese cross and an engraved plaque displaying a message from former President Ronald Reagan.
It’s encircled by plaques that display the names of the the men and women who died in service to their communities since 1981.
When a firefighter is killed in the line of duty, a notice of death is posted at the monument and the flags are lowered at half staff.
