DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – According to the calendar, next Monday is Columbus Day but in Dallas the day will bare a different name.
The Dallas City Council voted Tuesday to rename Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day. Supporters of the change said Tuesday that the new name is more appropriate when acknowledging Christopher Columbus’ journey.
“Native Americans were already living on the land when Columbus made his discovery,” one public speaker told the council.
City Councilman Omar Narvaez spearheaded the effort and said the name change is a way to honor all indigenous cultures.
“The City of Dallas does not recognize Columbus Day anyway so we aren’t replacing it,” said Narvaez. “So this would be an actual honoring of indigenous peoples.”
Dallas is one of 130 U.S. cities to make the change.
