HOUSTON (WBAP/KLIF) – More than 3,000 people attended the third Democratic Presidential debate Thursday night on the Texas Southern University campus in Houston.
Each candidate was given an opening statement, but no closing remarks. Several candidates challenged Americans to vote Preisdent Trump out of office, speaking about what they called “the dangers” he poses.
In an anticipated announcement, Entrepeneur Andrew Yang committed to giving out what he called a “freedom dividened” of $1,000 a month for an entire year to 10 American families.
The three frontrunners, Senator Elizabeth Warren, Senator Bernie Sanders, and former Vice President Joe Biden were pressed early on healthcare. Sanders and Warren backed “medicare for all,” while Biden doubled down on his committment to Obamacare. One of few tense moments occurred during the health care discussion when former HUD Secretary called out Biden.
“Do you not remember what you said just two minutes ago?” asked Castro.
The candidates were asked about a racial divide in the country. The two cnadidates from Texas, former Congressman Beto O’Rourke and Julian Castro jumped on the topic, following two mass shootings in their state last month, including in El Paso where Police say Mexicans were targeted. O’Rourke said he would sign a repearations bill if elected and called President Trump a white supremacist. Julian Castro said shootings like those in Texas have to come to an end.
The candidates agreed on a number of topics including more background check laws for gun purchases, and unifying as a country.
