EL PASO (WBAP/KLIF) – Hundreds of families are utilizing an assistance center in El Paso to try to get back on their feet after a gunman opened fire in a local Wal Mart Saturday, killing 22 people.
The Family Assistance Center is being run by the City of El Paso and the American Red Cross. It’s open to anyone affected by the tragedy, including the thousands of people who were in the store when gunfire erupted. A number of social services organizations are set up inside the center.
“We actually have the Department of Motor Vehicles here in case someone lost their Drivers License,” said Red Cross Regional Director, Kurt Kroener. “We have the Mexican consulate here and we have legal services here as well.”
Kroener said volunteers are specifically trained to listen and help people cope with tragedy.
“We’re the ones who want to bring that home back,” said Kroener. “Some resiliency.”
The center opened Tuesday and will stay open for at least 10 days.
