NEW ORLEANS (AP) – The New Orleans mayor is planning to remove 20 traffic enforcement cameras across the city.
Local media report Mayor LaToya Cantrell made the announcement Thursday while revealing her proposed 2019 budget to the City Council.
The cameras to be taken down are outside of school zones. There are still about 80 cameras in place in school zones and another 11 still remaining outside of school zones.
The traffic cameras are unpopular with many in the city and were a major issue during the mayoral election last year.
Cantrell says police will be directed to conduct more traffic enforcement.
Cantrell’s Chief Administrative Officer Gilbert Montano says taking down those 11 cameras will mean a loss of revenue between $4 million and $6 million.
