CORSICANA (WBAP/KLIF News) – A statue of a gorilla removed from a Corsicana city park is expected to return after citizens became upset that it was taken down.
The city said the statue removed after complaints from citizens that it was racially insensitive.
Speaking for Corsicana Mayor Den Denbow, Susan Wilson said as the complaints streamed in, the city felt the need to act.
“It was taken down because of comments provided to our city council over a period time that people felt it was racially insensitive,” she said.
After the memorial was taken down, a memorial was set up in its place asking for its return.
Wilson said the city has since reconsidered their options and decided to put the statue back with modifications.
“The cage however will be removed and the city has plans to reinstall the statue as soon as weather permits,” she said.
The city said it’s listened to both sides of the argument concerning the statue and will continue to do so when public tensions arise.
“We have city council people who are reaching out within their precinct,” she said.
The city said the statue will be put back later this month.
