Dallas (WBAP/KLIF) The original owner of the Dallas Mavericks has died at the age of 84. Don Carter passed away Wednesday night at his Uptown home. Carter owned the team from 1980 until 1996, when he sold his controlling interest to Ross Perot Junior. Carter still owned a small portion of the team until the day he died. Back in 2011, when the Mavs won the NBA finals, current owner Mark Cuban insisted NBA commissioner David Stern hand Carter the Larry O’Brien Trophy. In 2015, Cuban told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that Carter was “Mr. Maverick”.
