PROSPER (WBAP/KLIF News) – A Collin County city is using technology to help keep its citizens safe.
First responders in Prosper are wrapping up training on how to use the city’s new drone that will be an extra set of eyes on search and rescue or fire calls.
Prosper Fire Chief Stuart Blasingame said this will help first responders assess a situation faster than they’ve ever been able to.
“With this technology we can actually launch this in the air in less than about five minutes. We can get a birds-eye view from it and be able to wrap our minds around what’s going on and how fast fires are moving,” he said.
Brooks Nevil is a trained pilot and gave WBAP a glimpse of how the drone’s infrared sensors gage temperature.
“Basically what it does it allows us to see if someone is there or not. It could 50 degrees there or 60 degrees and we’ll see if they’re there,” he said.
Several other cities, including Wylie, have started using drone technology on rescue calls.
Blasingame said the department will be able to bring the drone to other cities if needed to assist on any calls where the drone could help out.
