St. Augustine, FL (WBAP/KLIF News) – An Irving man is in critical condition after he was “buried alive” when a sand dune collapsed on him Sunday afternoon.
According to statement on the St. John’s County Fire Rescue Facebook page, 35-year-old Lee Goggin was digging a tunnel next to a sand dune at Crescent Beach near St. Augustine around 1 p.m. when it suddenly collapsed on him.
When first responders arrived, they found Goggin under 2-3 feet of sand, freed him and rushed him to a nearby hospital.
No one else was injured in the collapse.
His sister called it a “freak accident” on the family’s GoFundMe page and is asking the community for help.
She said the family was just starting their vacation when they decided to stop at the beach to let the kids run around. Then, tragedy struck.
“Lee was building a tunnel in the sand when it collapsed on him. The has a heartbeat but he is not breathing on his own. The next 24 hours will be very critical for him and we need all the prayers we can get. Please keep his wife, Courtney, and their 3 sweet children, Jace-4 1/2. Colton 2 1/2 and Rylee 8 months, in your prayers along with his immediate family,” she said in a statement.
His family says Goggin has always been a fighter. According to an article published in the Fort Worth Star Telegram in 2014, he survived end-stage kidney disease after undergoing transplant surgery. His brother Aaron donated the kidney.
