(WBAP/KLIF) – Texas Speaker of the House, Joe Straus will not seek another term.
Straus announced Wednesday that he will finish out his term but won’t run for what would’ve been a record sixth term. The Speaker said he plans to look for another way to express his views within the Republican party. Straus who drew criticism from state conservatives said he’s proud of what the state accomplished since he became speaker in 2009.
“I do make no apology for working across party lines,” said Speaker Straus. “I think we do our best work when we do that. Washington could learn a few things from the Texas House when we’re at our best.”
Straus said he will continue to be a strong Republican voice in Texas.
“I think there is a hunger for a Republican voice out there that stresses issues that maybe haven’t gotten enough attention around the capitol the last few years.”
Straus wasn’t specific about his plans for the future.
