DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – Students at SMU evacuated their dorms Tuesday evening due to a power outage that started just after 4:00 pm.
One student told WFAA the power outage made the residence halls very uncomfortable.
“We had to evacuate mainly because of the air conditioning. What I experienced when I was in my dorm room, it was blazing in there. So they just asked us to evacuate because of our safety.”
Another student said that many people didn’t have anywhere local that they could stay.
“I have friends that are from places like Montana and California who are a little up a creek right now,” he said.
Highland Park United Methodist Church offered a helping hand, allowing displaced students a place to temporarily relocate. About 30 students accepted the invitation.
Students were allowed to return to the residence halls around 9:00 pm when power was restored but many of them lost their chance to study for Wednesday exams. Steven C. Currall issued a request to faculty asking that they reschedule any exams planned for Wednesday since students were unable to access their books and computers.
Oncor issued a statement saying that the outage was caused by equipment owned by the university.
