PLANO (WBAP/KLIF) – The Houston area hawk who received national attention after finding safety in a taxi cab during Hurricane Harvey is back in the wild.
After going through rehabilitation in North Texas, ‘Harvey the Hawk’ was released at the Oak Point Park and Nature Preserve in Plano. William Bruso is the cab driver who allowed the bird to seek shelter in his taxi. He says the hawk’s release is symbolic of the recovery happening in Southeast Texas.
“There’s been a lot of devastation and loss of life for wildlife and human life,” said Bruso. “So Harvey is an inspiration of hope for this hurricane.”
The hawk rode out the storm with Bruso.
“Every now and then she would get on the dashboard and go back to the seat,” said Bruso. “Then she rode around with me while I finished my routes and then we hunkered down for the hurricane.”
The Blackland Prairie Raptor Center in Lucas, Texas cared for the hawk and decided she was ready to be released closer to Dallas than Houston.
“With all the flooding down there the food source wasn’t want it needed to be,” said Jess Glotzbach with Blackland.
Harvey is considered a ‘Cooper’s hawk’ and feeds primarily on small birds. Wildlife experts believe he’ll be just fine flying the sky above North Texas.
