AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF News) — Every day 1.5 million Texas kids ride to and from school on buses. None of them are wearing seat belts.
State Senator Sylvia Garcia, D-Houston, is trying to change that. She has authored a bill that would require all 2017 and newer school buses to be equipped with three point seat belts for all passengers.
Garcia told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, “The goal of this legislation is to protect children, prevent injuries, and demonstrate that the State of Texas is serious about the safety of school children.”
“We spend a lot of tax dollars educating children to buckle up,” Garcia continued. “Not requiring them to buckle up on the way to school is inconsistent,” she said. “Parents rely on school transportation to get their children to school safely. New buses equipped with seat belts will get us where we need to be.”
The Senate Transportation Committee has approved the bill and sent it on to the full Senate.
