Fort Worth (WBAP/KLIF News) – Habitat for Humanity has started building a home for a family in Downtown Fort Worth. Volunteers with XTO Energy joined crews from Habitat in Sundance Square Plaza Tuesday morning.
“Depending on the weather, we’ll get the house totally framed up, painted, decked and shingled,” says Trinity Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Gage Yager. “Right now, it’s nice because the sun’s not out, so it’s nice and cool. It’s great building weather.”
Next week, the house will be moved to the Hillside/Morningside neighborhood, where Trinity Habitat is building 70 homes.
“The way to take a neighborhood back is with the residents in the neighborhood, to increase home ownership,” Yager says.
A family from Democratic Republic of the Congo will move into the house. Right now, Tayilo Ngalasa and her family live in an apartment.
“It’s a souvenir because it’s mine for life, I’ll be there all my life,” she says. “I’ll be there with my family, with my daughter, and we’ll have a safe place.”
Habitat for Humanity and XTO say about 200 volunteers will work on the house through Saturday. The house should be moved into place next week.
