McKINNEY (WBAP/KLIF News) — The sheriff’s department in Collin County is looking to expand its presence on the streets.
Sheriff Jim Skinner says increasing the amount of deputies on patrol each night was one of his goals when he won the election in November.
“Every night there’s only four deputies on duty and a supervisor,” Skinner said. “That’s not sufficient.”
He says he wants to add two more deputies to the streets, making it six per night. His plan to do that is to move deputies from other departments to the patrol division.
“I have deputies now that spend their time bouncing from call to call to call to call to call to call over an entire eight-hour period because there’s not enough deputies out to cover all the calls and stay in their patrol districts,” Skinner said.
Aside from what Skinner sees as an insufficient number of deputies on patrol, he said he wants to be proactive in regards to Collin County’s growth, saying they’ll need the extra help as people flood to the county from both Texas and out of state.
Skinner said he will not ask the county for additional funds until he has reallocated so many officers to the point where he simple can’t anymore and would need extra manpower.
