Dallas (WBAP/KLIF News) – A Dallas police officer who gained worldwide attention after the killing of five officers in July spent Tuesday afternoon taking questions from students at Bishop Lynch High School. Dylan Smith graduated from the high school.
“It’s just a good way to show that, hey, those lessons you learn here can be applied elsewhere in life,” Smith says. “That’s something that I think is a really strong message.”
A picture shows Smith taking cover behind a police car the night of the shooting. Smith told students he wanted to tell his sergeant to stop taking pictures.
“When I first saw it, I thought, ‘Oh God, I’m really sweaty,’” he told students. “I don’t look that good in real life.”
Students also asked if he had a partner, how many tickets he’s written and where he went to college. Smith told students he had never fired his gun in the line of duty before and 90 percent of officers are never involved in shootings.
“I loved the questions,” Smith says. “I can’t say it enough, they asked great questions. I’m not a big public speaker, but I love talking to people.”
